Power-controlled window
Designed to seal a wall or roof opening, a powercontrolled window is a component that is used for ventilation and smoke exhaust purposes and, at times, to serve as a passageway (e.g. window door). The window sash is moved by drives. This mechanism involves certain risks that must be prevented by appropriate protective measures.
Since a power-controlled window is considered a machine, the manufacturer of the machine is required by Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC to prepare a risk assessment that takes into account the following factors:
- Installation situation
- User
- Control / operation of the drives
This risk assessment is required when the following conditions are met:
- main closing edge of the window > 2.5 m above ground or
- opening width at the main closing edge > 200 mm or
- closing speed at the main closing edge > 15 mm/s or
- opening speed at the main closing edge > 50 mm/s or
- closing force at the main closing edge > 150N
Owner and planner are expected to conduct this risk assessment and spell out the necessary protective measures. The installer of the machine “power-controlled window” is required to implement or determine the intended protective measures on site and report / minimise any residual risks.
