HAUTAU invests in Helpsen

Construction of a new coil warehouse

Construction work began in July 2024. The new coil warehouse will further improve the material flow at HAUTAU and at the same time provide a safe and effective solution for storing and working with coils. The Austrian MACO Group company has thus made a further investment and optimised its site in Helpsen. The new building is now nearing completion.

Helpsen, 18 February 2025 - Metal strips wound into coils are referred to as coils. The rolls of flat steel come from a rolling mill and are sent for further processing at HAUTAU. In coiled form, the metals require far less space for storage and transport, but they are still heavy, bulky and vary in weight and diameter. Previously, the coils were stored in different areas of the company premises. Handling the sensitive steel coils was difficult and the internal logistics faced particular challenges for safe handling.

The construction of a separate coil storage facility was intended to significantly shorten the route of the coils from the storage location to the decoiler of the presses and thus make the material supply to the machines more efficient. Located directly next to the press shop, the new 300 square metre building now ensures clear and careful storage of the round loads with continuous availability and faster access times. Thanks to a modern storage system with customised heavy-duty shelving, the existing hall height can be utilised to its full capacity. In future, up to seven coils can be stored on top of each other in individual compartments in 44 flexible shelving bays. This means a total capacity of over 300 coils with a maximum weight of 1900 kg. A reach truck will be used to handle the coils in the building and transport them quickly and safely to the processing station. The industrial truck is characterised in particular by its ability to store and retrieve loads at great heights, while its high manoeuvrability and manoeuvrability allow it to adapt perfectly to the tightest of spaces.

The decentralised heating system installed in the constructed hall uses an integrated fan to ensure continuous air circulation and thus guarantees fast and even heat distribution in the room. In this way, the ideal temperature control achieves consistently high corrosion protection and the steel remains in optimum condition during storage.
